Grants Archives | Go Small Business

Grants are the closest thing to free money in the business world. You don’t pay them back and you don’t give up equity. The catch is that most UK business grants are competitive, slow to pay out, and come with conditions attached. This guide walks through every live grant database, what you can realistically apply for, and how to write an application that actually gets funded. What this guide covers What a UK business grant actually is (and what it is not) The main types of grant available to small businesses in 2026 Official grant databases for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Step by step, how to apply How to write a stronger application What to do if your application is rejected Alternatives if no grant fits your business What is a business grant? A business grant is a sum of money given to your business by a government body, charity or corporate scheme, for a specific purpose. You don’t repay it and you don’t give up shares. In return, the funder usually wants you to: Spend the money on something specific, such as buying equipment, creating jobs or developing a new product Match the grant with your own money (typically between 25% and 70% of project costs) Report back on what you spent, what you built, and what the outcome was That last point matters. Grants are rarely simple cash handouts. Most UK grants are reimbursements: you spend the money first, submit receipts, and claim it back once you’ve proved the work was done. Budget for the gap between spending and reimbursement before you start. Who can get a UK business grant? Most UK grants are open to registered businesses and sole traders. Beyond that, eligibility depends on three things: Where your business is based. Many grants are restricted to specific regions, postcodes or devolved nations. Your sector. A large proportion of UK grant funding is ringfenced for industries like manufacturing, clean tech, life sciences, food production and the arts. What you plan to spend the money on. A grant for hiring an apprentice can’t be used to buy a van. You will also see eligibility cut by business age and size. Start up grants usually want businesses less than three years old. Growth grants often require a minimum employee count or turnover threshold. Innovation grants typically need a formally defined project with a start and end date. The main types of UK business grant in 2026 Start up grants Small cash awards, usually between £500 and £5,000, aimed at new businesses. Most are run by local councils or Growth Hubs. These are the easiest grants to apply for and the fastest to pay out. They are also oversubscribed, so speed matters once a round opens. Innovation and R&D grants The biggest category by value. Innovate UK runs the flagship schemes, with individual awards ranging from £25,000 feasibility studies up to multi million pound collaborative R&D grants. These require a clearly defined innovation, a capable team, and a project plan with milestones and deliverables. Note: Innovate UK paused its headline Smart Grants for the 2025/26 financial year while it redesigned the scheme. A replacement pilot launched in spring 2025. For open rounds, check the Innovation Funding Service or the UKRI funding finder. Growth and capital grants Aimed at established businesses that want to expand. Typical uses include new premises, machinery, hiring and export activity. Scotland’s Small Capital Grant, Welsh manufacturing grants and English Growth Hub capital schemes all fall into this bucket. Awards range widely, from around £1,000 to over £100,000. Regional and local grants Most English grants are now administered by the 38 Growth Hubs, funded partly by local authorities and partly by Department for Business and Trade budgets. The devolved nations run separate programmes through Scottish Enterprise, Business Wales and Invest NI. Sector specific grants Agriculture, food production, tourism, the arts, green energy, life sciences and digital all have dedicated funding streams. If you operate in one of these sectors, look for sector grants before generalist business grants. Competition is usually thinner and awards larger. Green and net zero grants A growing category in 2026. The Workplace Charging Scheme covers up to £350 per EV charger, capped at 40 sockets per business. Energy efficiency grants covering insulation, heat pumps and on site renewables are available through many local authorities. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays towards low carbon heating installations for small commercial properties in some cases. Where to find UK business grants There is no single national database that lists every UK grant. There are, however, a small number of official databases that between them cover almost everything worth applying for. You apply through the service itself. As of April 2026, the database shows just over 100 open grants at any given time. England: your local Growth Hub Every English region has a Growth Hub. Most of the local, lower-friction grants (digital adoption vouchers, capital equipment grants, skills bootcamps) are run through these, not through central government. A Growth Hub adviser is also the best free resource for figuring out what you can apply for. Scotland: Find Business Support findbusinesssupport.gov.scot is the single database for Scottish funding. It covers Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, South of Scotland Enterprise, Business Gateway and local authority grants. Scottish Enterprise handles the larger awards, including the Small Capital Grant. Business Gateway handles start up support. Wales: Business Wales Finance Locator Business Wales runs a finance locator at businesswales.gov.wales/finance-locator. Welsh manufacturing and community enterprise grants are particularly well funded relative to the rest of the UK, and SMART Cymru is a strong route for innovation projects. Northern Ireland: nibusinessinfo.co.uk nibusinessinfo.co.uk has a grants and funding finder. Invest NI runs the core schemes, including the Business Innovation Grant (up to £10,000 towards bringing a new product, service or process to market) and export support for NI businesses trading outside Ireland. Private and third sector grants Don’t ignore the non-government side. The Prince’s Trust Enterprise Programme backs under-30s starting a business. UnLtd funds social entrepreneurs. Local community foundations, energy suppliers and large corporates run their own schemes too. Platforms like Swoop and GrantTree aggregate these alongside the government databases, though both are commercial services and some of their listings are paid. How to apply for a business grant: step by step Step 1: Confirm you are eligible Before you write a word, read the eligibility criteria in full. More grants are rejected on eligibility than on quality. Check: Is your business based in the right location? Are you the right size (employee count, turnover, age)? Does your planned spend count as eligible expenditure under the scheme rules? Are you inside the application deadline (and will you finish the project inside the funding window)? Can you meet the match-funding requirement? If any answer is a ’not quite’, move on. Time spent on a borderline grant is time taken away from one you could actually win. Step 2: Gather your paperwork Most UK grant applications ask for some combination of: A current business plan Two to three years of accounts (or forecasts if you are newly trading) A cash flow forecast that covers the project period Quotes from suppliers, where capital spend is involved Companies House number and VAT number (if applicable) Details of directors and shareholders Evidence of your match funding (a savings statement, loan offer or investor commitment letter) Pull all of this together before you open the application form. It is much easier to write a coherent pitch when the numbers are already on the desk in front of you. Step 3: Write the application Grant applications almost always have a word limit per question and a scoring rubric attached to each one. The assessor will score each answer individually. Two practical rules follow. First, answer the question that was actually asked. If the question is ’How will your project contribute to regional economic growth?’, do not answer with your founder story. Assessors score what is in front of them. Second, use the language of the scheme. If the grant is about ’innovation’, use that word. If it is about ’productivity’ or ’net zero’ or ’exports’, use those words. Don’t copy the question back verbatim, but make sure your answer maps cleanly to the scoring criteria. A good grant answer has three parts: what you plan to do, why it matters, and how you will prove it worked. Drop any of those and the score drops with it. Step 4: Submit and track Submit well before the deadline. Funding platforms slow down or crash close to deadlines, particularly the Innovation Funding Service on large Innovate UK rounds. Once you have submitted, save a PDF copy of your application for your own records. Expect a decision window of four to twelve weeks for most schemes. Innovate UK competitions take around three months from close to decision. Step 5: If you are funded Read the offer letter carefully before you sign. Look out for: Subsidy control limits (UK rules that replaced state aid post-Brexit cap most combined public funding at around £315,000 over three years) Reporting requirements, usually quarterly or at defined project milestones Clawback clauses, which let the funder reclaim money if you do not deliver what you promised Restrictions on grant-funded equipment (you normally cannot sell or dispose of it for a set period, usually three to five years) Step 6: If you are rejected Ask for feedback. Most schemes will share scorecard comments on request. An application rejected at Innovate UK can usually be resubmitted to the next round with the feedback addressed, and rejection feedback is often the single best guide to writing the revised version. How to write a stronger grant application A few habits consistently separate winning applications from losing ones. Be specific ’We will create jobs’ is not an answer. ’We will hire two software engineers at £45,000 in Q3 2026 and a marketing lead in Q1 2027’ is. Assessors score demonstrated understanding, not stated confidence. Show why the money is needed Funders want evidence that the grant makes the project happen, not that it tops up something you would have done anyway. This is called ’additionality’ and it is often scored directly. If you can show the project stops or shrinks without the grant, say so and explain why. Get the numbers right Budget errors are a common rejection reason. Quote line by line, with supplier quotes attached where possible. If the application asks for a project budget, make sure it reconciles to your cash flow forecast. Make it readable Short sentences. Plain English. No jargon. Assessors read dozens of applications in a day, and the ones that are easiest to score usually win. Avoid acronyms without definitions. Get a second pair of eyes on it Your accountant, a business adviser at the local Growth Hub, or a Prince’s Trust mentor. Fresh eyes catch the sentences that make sense to you but not to anyone else. Common mistakes to avoid Applying for the first grant you find rather than the best fit Treating the grant as a revenue line before you have won it Underestimating how long the process takes (three months is normal) Promising outcomes you cannot realistically deliver, because clawback hurts Not reading the offer letter in full before signing Spending grant money on ineligible items (rent, salaries and routine overheads are often excluded) Missing VAT in the budget (grants usually cover the net cost, not the gross) Alternatives if you cannot get a grant Grants are competitive and slow. For many small businesses, other forms of funding will be faster and more reliable. Start Up Loans The British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans scheme offers £500 to £25,000 per founder (up to £100,000 per business, across up to four founders) at a fixed rate. As of 6 April 2026, that rate is 7.5%, up from 6% previously. The same update extended eligibility to businesses trading for up to 60 months, up from the previous 36-month cap. Free mentoring is included in the scheme. R&D tax credits HMRC’s R&D tax relief rebates between 15% and 27% of qualifying R&D spend, depending on whether you are profit making or loss making and which scheme you claim under. This is a tax claim, not a grant, and you can combine it with grant funding, though some grants will reduce your R&D claim proportionally. Equity funding Angel investment and SEIS/EIS-qualifying investment is worth considering if your business is scalable enough to interest investors. The tax reliefs make SEIS in particular attractive to UK investors, and it is often easier to raise £150,000 of SEIS than to win £50,000 of grant funding on a competitive scheme. Local authority loans and vouchers Not every local scheme is a grant. Some are interest-free loans, others are ’vouchers’ for pre-approved suppliers (common in digital adoption schemes). Check the small print, because the application effort is often similar to a grant but the money comes with a repayment schedule. FAQs How much can I get in a UK business grant? Anywhere from £500 for a small start up grant to several million pounds for collaborative Innovate UK R&D. Most small business grants fall between £1,000 and £25,000. Do I pay tax on grant money? Most revenue grants are taxable as business income. Capital grants often reduce the depreciable value of the asset instead of counting as income. The rules vary by scheme, so check with your accountant. Can I apply for more than one grant at the same time? Yes, though subsidy control rules cap combined public funding at around £315,000 over a rolling three-year period for most businesses. Individual schemes will also have their own rules on double funding, particularly for the same project. How long does it take to get a grant? From application to decision: four weeks for smaller local grants, up to three months for national schemes. From decision to first payment: usually two to six weeks, though remember that most grants reimburse you after you have spent the money. Can a sole trader apply for grants? Yes. Plenty of grants include sole traders, particularly at the start up and small capital end of the market. Innovate UK feasibility studies accept sole traders. Some larger R&D grants only fund limited companies, so check scheme rules. Do I need a business plan? For almost every grant, yes. Some smaller schemes accept a short project summary instead, but a full business plan is almost always helpful. What is match funding? Match funding is your own contribution to the project cost, alongside the grant. A scheme offering 50% match funding for a £20,000 project will give you £10,000 and expect you to find the other £10,000 yourself. Match can come from cash reserves, a loan, or sometimes in-kind contributions like staff time, depending on the scheme. Where to go next Pick one database from the list above and spend an hour filtering for grants you are eligible for. Most people end up with a shortlist of three to five genuinely relevant schemes. From there, pick the one that matches your next planned spend. A grant application is far easier to write when you already know exactly what you would do with the money. If you are not sure where to start, your local Growth Hub (England), Business Gateway (Scotland), Business Wales adviser or Invest NI adviser will sit down with you free of charge and walk through the options. Use that meeting before you spend time on applications.
